The trek

A non-technical 6,000-metre summit above the Baralacha La — the most forgiving way to learn what high-altitude mountaineering actually asks of you.

Mt. Yunam rises to 6,111 metres above the Baralacha La on the Manali–Leh highway, and it has quietly become the peak that Indian mountaineers cut their teeth on. There is no technical climbing — no vertical ice, no exposed rock — only a long, lung-burning snow slog at an altitude where the air holds barely half the oxygen of the plains.

That is exactly the point. Yunam teaches the real skills of an expedition: roping up, walking on crampons, pacing your breath, and reading your own body at altitude. We run it as a proper expedition with a base camp, acclimatisation rotations and a pre-dawn summit push, so you leave with a genuine 6,000er behind you and the confidence to go higher.

Highlights

  • A genuine 6,111 m summit with no technical climbing
  • Your first lesson in crampons, rope-work and high-altitude pacing
  • The stark beauty of the Baralacha region on the Manali–Leh road
  • A real base-camp expedition, not a day hike

The itinerary

8 days from Bharatpur Tent Colony. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.

The expedition begins in Manali, a lively backpacking hub and popular Himalayan destination with excellent road connectivity. Day 1 is dedicated to arrivals, check-ins, and settling into your accommodation. Because most climbers travel directly from lower elevations, giving your body time to adjust to the thinner mountain air is crucial for a smooth expedition. We use this initial downtime productively: the team gathers for introductions, an essential mountain safety and protocol briefing, and a detailed walk-through of the route, expected weather, terrain, and high-altitude conditions on Mount Yunam.
